Which Cereal Is The Healthiest? How to Read Cereal Box Nutritional Information

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Cereals are a quick and easy breakfast option, but what is the impact of cereal on our nutritional profile? How to make the most of your breakfast.

Breakfast cereals aren’t as good as they seem. Consumers everywhere are being misled by the sugar content, carbohydrate count, and serving size of cereals.

You can choose cereals that are healthy and nutritious. We've also got for when your cereal becomes stale.

What is the healthiest cereal to eat?

Cereals fortified with fiber and made from whole grains are the healthiest.

You don't have to spend a fortune to get nutrient-dense and healthy cereal options. Many expensive organic cereals do not contain any fortification.

Mohr explains that ready-to-eat breakfast cereals are a great source of nutrition, especially for children. Breakfast cereal fortification is a key component because it provides vitamins and minerals you wouldn't normally get.

Mohr suggests looking for "whole grain" on the ingredient label.

Fiber content is also important. e Mohr suggests choosing cereals with at least 3 grams of fiber in each serving. However, many cereals have much more than this.

Is cereal healthy?

Mohr says that added sugar is a major concern with cereal consumption, but the problem is not as bad as one might think.

e Cereal is far behind sugar-sweetened drinks (24%) and sweet snacks and desserts (11%). Even coffee and tea contain more sugar than cereal.

Mohr says that even though they get a bit more sugar, the added sugar is still relatively low in the U.S. Diet. If you eat cereal for breakfast along with fruit, milk, and a hard-boiled yolk to add some protein you are certainly following the dietary guidelines.

It's better to choose cereals with less sugar added (the average cereal contains eight to ten grams of sugar per serving), but that doesn't mean you shouldn’t eat cereal with sugar added in general.

Mohr notes that cereal is a good source of nutrients.

Studies show that a breakfast of cereal and milk compared to an empty stomach positively affects data.
