South Island, New Zealand

Why go to South Island, New Zealand?

The South Island of New Zealand has many attractions, including dreamy alpine experiences and colorful hiking trails. Or it can be a peaceful, healing escape from recent pandemic years. After more than two years of tight entry restrictions, the government of New Zealand has now relaxed its border restrictions.

South Island

The 58,084-square mile island, known in Maori (the Maori language used by New Zealand's Maori people), is located in Australasia's southernmost region. It borders the Tasman Sea to its west and the Pacific Ocean to its east. The destination is larger in geography but less populous than the North Island. It stretches from the beautiful golden sands in the Nelson region (a 3.5 hour ferry ride from the capital of Wellington) to rugged mountain landscapes in rural Otago, Southland, and the Pacific Ocean on the east. Visitors will find everything they need, from wine regions, Maori cultural experiences, and Hollywood filming locations, to the stunning backbone of Southern Alps mountain range.

American tourists can fly directly to Auckland on the North Island from Los Angeles, New York City and Dallas. From there, they can take a domestic flight into South Island cities such as Queenstown and Dunedin. Domestic connections within Aotearoa, the Maori name for New Zealand, are only two hours away. These scenic adventures offer breathtaking views and a variety of experiences as you look down on stunning views before reaching your destination. Window seats are a must!
