Sandwich Dressing We've Found Our New Favorite Trendy Styling Trick (And It's So Simple)

It's whether it's turning your T-shirt bras into bras with backs, turning two bikini bottoms into a stylish shirt, or using a hair tie to temporarily sew up your pants We love an easy fashion hack. It's especially fun when it comes with a catchy name, such as our current style fascination, "sandwich dressing." It's not a reference to mayonnaise but rather an idea to think about creating clothes in like how you consider creating the sandwich.

The first time we heard of this fun technique was when Glamour UK covered the trick in the viral video uploaded by stylist Lydia Tomlinson.

"If you imagine sandwiches, they have the bread on the top and the bread on the bottom and something else at the center," Tomlinson explains in her very first blog post. "This results in an even result. Also, the same rules are applicable to your clothing." The basic idea behind her Sandwich Rule of Dressing entails placing one piece of clothing on your lower half and one on top and adding something different to the middle.

As Tomlinson illustrates, this effect can be accomplished by using the color of the fabric, its weight, or even proportions. In her very first instance, she demonstrates how chunky black boots with cream-colored jeans with a white t-shirt can appear hefty on the bottom. With the simple accessory of the black belt or scarf, the outfit is more balanced. "The crucial thing is to incorporate some of the colors from your shoes into the very top of your dress to achieve that equilibrium. Another option to achieve this is to wear jackets and coats."

Also, tops that are too big in heavier materials, such as Tomlinson's plaid blazer look good with slim-fitting jeans as well as dainty ballet flats. She suggests wearing them with a more robust shoe, such as an oversized or taller lug sole. In this case, the bread is a jacket and boots and the sandwich's filling can be found in the jeans that are skinny.

In the final segment, Tomlinson discusses how to use to apply the Sandwich Rule when styling voluminous pieces. With a padded sweater on her shoulders and an oversized black belt for the waist and skinny black jeans, she says, "Skinny jeans make the sweater feel heavy and take away from the slender silhouette around the waist created by the belt. To emphasize the waistline's shape and even out the shoulders with padding the slightly longer legs appears more appealing." She gives more information on this subject in her subsequent video, which focuses on what she calls the Sandwich Rule using proportions.

What does this style look like IRL? Here are four images from our top street-style icons.

1. The Bread is a Camel-Colored Sweater, Camel-Colored Pants Cowboy Boots

Shanna Battle's outfit here illustrates how to apply the Sandwich Rule in two different ways: first using colors, and then using materials. The darker sweater she drapes on her shoulders is crucial to balance her tough cowboy boots, and not appear at her bottom as heavy. Additionally, the thicker wool and leather shoes double as "bread" that balances a light blouse.

2. Bread Sheer Blouse with Minimalist Sandals

The denim fabric, especially in light washes, can be incredibly heavy. However, Liz Teich's slim top and barely there sandals make gorgeous bookends for her wide-leg pants, which give the denim's thick texture a spring-like vibe.

3. Bread and Puff-Sleeve Blouse as well as Wide-Leg Trousers

Ijeomakola shows how to apply the Sandwich Rule for proportions perfectly in this look that balances a full top and wide-leg pants, with a waistline that is cinched and accented by the belt. Plus, the belt is black, and the bottom and top are both light-colored which further enhances the illusion of a slim waist.

4. Bread: Beige Handbag and Beige Sandals

Here's a unique take on color applications. Grace Atwood's colorful mini should be in the spotlight. That is why neutral-hued accessories are the most appropriate choice. A pair of bright shoes or a handbag with patterns can be fun, but they make it difficult for the eyes to locate an area of focus and may end up being a mess.
