A Global Perspective on Sustainable Fashion Practices

The United States disposes of approximately 12.4 million tonnes of textile waste annually. This is almost as much as the annual total waste produced in the United Kingdom. The textile industry is the largest in the world. It is one of the most polluting industries, and it is also one that uses a lot of energy. According to the FAO, each person consumed 11.1 kilograms of textile fiber in 2007. FAO also reported that 14.5 Million Tonnes of textiles were burned or combusted. This represents 5.8% of the total MSW generation. The textile industry is growing in size and impact on the environment. Globally, 70.6 million tonnes of textile fibers were manufactured in 2007. Production reached 90.8 million tonnes in 2014. One-third of global waste streams are generated by the textile industry. The US disposes of 85% of all textiles in landfills. An average American throws out 37kg of clothing each year.

Environmental Impact

Quantis International recently identified three major drivers of industry pollution impact: fiber production, yarn prep, dyeing, and finishing, according to a study. Fiber production is the most energy-intensive stage in textile production. The dye water left over is often dumped in streams or ditches. A kilogram of cotton will require between 7,500 and 10,000 liters of water. This water consumption is equivalent to 10 years worth of drinking water per person. The fashion industry uses a lot of chemicals to make fabric. These chemicals pose serious health risks.

Humane Treatment of Workers

It is a terrible industry that suffers from poor working conditions, low wages, and a host of human rights violations. Several companies have begun to adopt fair labor practices and are improving the quality of life of workers in the fashion industry.

Climate Change is being Combated

There are many ways you can combat climate change, whether you're a consumer or a fashion designer. Support sustainable fashion by buying sustainable products, reducing waste and water, and using sustainable transport.

Fashion Industry Harms Animals

Despite the efforts of animal advocates and some edgy brands, the fashion industry continues its harmful practices in all aspects of animals' lives. Animals are raped, abused, and killed during the design, production, distribution, and distribution phases of a garment. Some animals are protected under the law while others are not. This has resulted in the abuse of millions upon millions of animals every year. It is best to shop at ethical and sustainable companies for clothes and accessories to reduce your animal footprint.

Trade and Labor Laws are improved

The fashion industry is being pressured to increase worker rights throughout its supply chain. Major brands have issued statements about the importance of their workers. Many offer training sessions for garment workers. These efforts will not suffice.
